I'm Richard S. Holmes, known to friends as Rich. I'm a Research Assistant Professor in the Physics Department of Syracuse University. (See my physics web site.) I got my bachelor's degree in the physics department of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (where I was a founding member and president of the WPI Science Fiction Society and a reasonably benign hacker), and my master's and PhD degrees in the physics department of the University of Maryland at College Park. Off hours, I read science fiction and fantasy; do contradancing and morris dancing; play melodeon (a type of button accordion), concertina, and pennywhistle, listen to (mostly decidedly un-Popular) music, mess around with my Macintosh; homebrew beer; play games of, mostly, a mathematical sort, and trace my family's genealogy. I also have a fondness for absurdities, jokes, and wordplay. My wife Heather is a Registered Nurse. Her interests include morris and contradancing, beekeeping, and quilting. We have a son, Kenny. We also have some poultry. Besides this site at www.richholmes.net, I also maintain material on web sites at physics.syr.edu, mep1.phy.syr.edu, oddwinds.wikispaces.com, and freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com. But I can quit anytime... |
