The New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council recently celebrated the 20th Annual Achievement Awards at the Executive Mansion in Albany, New York. A WNY honoree, Ms. Monica S. Moshenko of Clarence, New York was selected for the 2005 Achievement Award for Public Awareness for the radio show she started and hosts every week, DisAbility News & Views Radio.
Award criteria includes the following: The honoree is a New York State based media organization (print, audio or audio/visual) that has made an outstanding contribution to the independence, productivity, inclusion, and community integration of people with developmental disabilities. The organization has demonstrated a promotion of public awareness of the capabilities of people with disabilities, improving individual and community awareness of capabilities of people with developmental disabilities contribution as good neighbors.
Past recipients of the Achievement Award for Public Awareness include WCNY and Cazenovia College, Staten Island Advance, Time Warner, Plattsburgh Press Republican, Charles Slater, DisAbility Resources, Watertown Daily Times, Riverdale Press, Ginno Piazza and Joe Picciotto.
Other local and notable winners of this year's Achievement Awards include Congressman Tom Reynolds as Community Leader of the Year/Federal and Wegman's Food Markets Inc. as Employer of the Year.
While Ms. Moshenko was advocating for children with special needs and Co-Chair for the Inaugural Walk for Autism, she saw a huge void in talk radio for people with disabilities and filled it. She has spent the last year broadcasting at a local radio station in WNY. Due to high listener demand, Monica began airing the show in September online at www.disabilitynewsradio.com The live talk show is broadcast on Sunday at 10PM and Wednesday at 12PM Eastern. Past shows are archived on the website for access along with many resources. Since broadcasting online, the radio show has become a global talk show as listeners tune in from the UK, Phillippines, Japan, Canada, India, Germany, Norway, Australia, Switzerland and across the United States.
Since 2003 Ms. Moshenko has been serving as a Public Member of the State Board for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, NYS Office of Professions. She also is a parent of three children, and a Senior Staff Assistant at the Great Lakes Program, State University of New York at Buffalo since 1989.
