Association of Research Libraries (ARL)

General

Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Statistics and performance measurement program.

Including: ARL annual salary survey, ARL Statistics and its Interactive edition, Developing Indicators for Academic Library Performance: Ratios, ARL Academic Law and Medical Library Statistics, ARL Preservation Statistics, Library materials budget survey, and the E&G Report: Library expenditures as a percentage of educational and general (E&G) expenditures. The 1993, 1885-1999 ARL supplementary statistics and questionnaire contains questions on electronic resources and services. See also: ARL new measures.

From Lynch (below), ARL "has been publishing basic descriptive statistics about its members annually since 1961-62 continuing what usedto be the Gerould Statistics dating back to 1908. In the 1990šs ARL began collecting the data electronically and posting it on their web site along with software that enables the user to manipulate the data. Although only a small number of libraries are covered, these statistics are of general interest because ARL libraries collectively spend about 40% of the dollars spent by academic libraries and employ about one-third of all academic librarians." The ARL Suplementary statistics 1998-1999 note that ARL libraries spent $77 million or 10.5% of their materials budget on electronic resources.
