Cape Breton Crown Land
Page

I have transcribed the Cape Breton Crown Land Papers that relate to D'Escousse or that relate to my family elsewhere on Isle Madame. This list is not inclusive as you will see by the missing index numbers.  The records provide a wealth of information on Isle Madame families including number of children, location of land, and years spent on the island.  I hope this too is of help to my fellow researchers.

159    MARTEL, JOSEPH & OTHERS Petition to Despard: Petitioners are resident on the north shore of Bariswa Harbour in Rocky Bay, where they have lived and carried on the fisheries for 25 years. As the land in the rear of their dwellings is composed of bogs, swamps, and morasses, they had not thought it would be sought by anyone. Lately the acting surveyor has laid off this land for Lawrence Kavanagh and George Hines, fisherman, thus exclusing the older settlers from their sources of firewood and pasturage. They ask that they may have warrants of survey, and that the lines by run from the shore northward toward Desgouse grants; in this way all might be accommodated.
