The Burke Family

of D'Escousse, Nova Scotia

Author's note:   Through my mother I am a McDonald. William Burke, the first of the Burke name in D'Escousse, Isle Madame, Nova Scotia, married my great+ aunt Ludivine McDonald, daughter of Edward McDonald. Therefore, all Burkes are McDonald descendants.

The information below is what I have on the Burke clan. I am happy to add any information you might wish to share. Anyone with information on this or any D'Escousse family is invited to contact me.

THE BURKE FAMILY

This page is fairly long.  If you're unsure of where your BURKE might connect, just use your browser's search engine if you're looking for a particular Burke family member. I have included the families of Burke daughters, but stopped there.   Burke granddaughters will show up under other family names.

At the end of the descendants of William Burke you will find several additional Burkes that I have been unable to connect to the family. Can you help?

One more thing, my original document contained French accent marks, but I have been unable to migrate those to the Web. So if you come across the name Desire or Coupe or some others, please read them with accents over the letter e.

Most of the data has sources listed in brackets after the date. CR refers to census record, PR to parish register, VR to vital record, etc. I can supply any specific citations if you wish. I also have only listed people up to about the year 1900 in most cases to protect descendants' privacy. If you have need to know about recent generations, please let me know.

1. WILLIAM BURKE, was born about 1779/80; and died before 1833. He married, probably about 1797, LUDIVINE McDONALD, daughter of Edward and Marguerite-Gervaise (Josse) McDonald, probably born at Gabarus about 1776 and died at D'Escousse before 1835. They were both deceased by the time of their son Walter's marriage in 1845.

They lived at D'Escousse where the 1811 census listed: William Burck, mariner, 4 males and 1 female under 14, 2 cattle and 2 sheep.

In 1813 William Burke was listed in the Cape Breton militia roll as a member of the Seventh Military Division. He is listed with his father-in-law and brothers-in-law in D'Escousse. He was aged 33 years, a fisherman, and was born in D'Escousse. He owned one horned cattle and 4 sheep. In the household was his wife, 4 sons and 1 daughter.

6. vi. ELIZABETH, m. Honore [Henry] Samson.
7. vii. WALTER, b. 1820/1.

2. DESIRE BURKE, son of William and Ludivine (McDonald) Burke, was probably born before 1800, and died after 1838 but before the 1861 census was taken. He married MARGUERITE COUPE, daughter of Jean and Francoise (Lester) Coupe, born about 1799, and died at Poulamond, 28 July 1875.

In 1838 'Desire and Margaret Burk' were listed in the census at D'Escousse where he was a fisherman. With them were six children, two males (Desire and William) and one female (Madeleine) under age 6, and one male (Siffroi) and two females under age 14. The identity of the two females is not known.

Marguerite Burke was listed in the 1861 census in D'Escousse as a widow. The ages of those listed indicate that her sons Desire and Maxime, and her widowed son William were living with her. Also listed were two single females between the ages of 20 and 30. One would have been her daughter Madeleine, leaving room for the other to be Emily who did not marry until after the 1861 census was taken. In 1871 she was living in Poulamond with her son Desire and his family.

William and Charlotte were listed in the 1838 census taken at D'Escousse where he was a fisherman. With them were three females under age 6 (Caroline, Virginie and Sabine), and male (Elias) and one female (Charlotte) under age 14, and a female over age 14.

William was listed in the 1861 census for D'Escousse with his wife and four of his children. In 1871 he listed himself as a fisherman of Irish descent, and in 1881 of French descent.

They resided at D'Escousse with daughter Caroline Petitpas in 1881. They were not listed in the 1891 census.

Children:
  i.

In 1838 Edward and Mary Burk were listed in the census taken at D'Escousse where he was a fisherman. With them were three males under age 6 (Edward, Aime and Desire). In 1861 Edward and family were listed in the census at D'Escousse. They were both living at D'Escousse in 1871 and 1881 where he was listed as a fisherman of Irish descent. In 1891 Edward, a widower, was living with his son Edward in D'Escousse.

5. RUFINE BURKE, probably the daughter of William and Ludivine (McDonald) Burke, was born about 1809, and was buried at D'Escousse 7 Nov. 1900 [PR]. She married SIMON LEBLANC, who was born about 1804/5, and was buried at D'Escousse 18 Jan. 1883 aged 77 years [PR].

Marriage records of her children list her as Rufine Burke. The only Burke family in D'Escousse was the family of William and Ludivine. The 1811 census listing for William Burke shows a daughter under age 14. The 1813 militia roll also shows a
daughter. This unidentified daughter would be of the right age to be Rufine.

The 1838 census shows Simon LeBlong & R. [his wife] in D'Escousse. Simon was a fisherman. With them were two females under age 6, 1 male under age 14, and one female under age 14. All known children except one were born after the 1838 census
was taken.

The 1861 census shows Simon LeBlanc and his wife, both age 50 - 60. With them were a single male 20 - 30 (probably Simon), a single female 10 - 15 (Philomene), and a single male 10 – 15 (Edward).

Children, surname LeBLANC:

6. ELIZABETH BURKE, the daughter of William and Ludivine (McDonald) Burke, was buried at D'Escousse 9 Jan. 1865 [PR]. She married at D'Escousse, 10 Nov. 1835 [PR] HONORE [HENRY] SAMSON, son of Louis and Marie (LeCointe) Samson. He was living in D'Escousse in 1891 with his second wife, Julia Poirier.

Elizabeth's marriage listed her as child of Edward Burke and Ludivine McDonald, but the only Ludivine old enough to be her mother was married to William Burke, not Edward. She is probably the Isabelle Burke who was godmother to Michel McDonald 29 Mar. 1832 [PR], as her death record in 1865 listed her as Isabelle.

Henry (a fisherman) and Elizabeth Samson were listed in the 1838 D'Escousse census. With them were a male under 6 [Henry], but also one male and three females over age 14. The male might have been her brother Walter, but the identity of the females is not known.

Children, surname SAMSON:

  i.

HENRY, b. 1838; d. by 1881; m. at D'Escousse 10 May 1862 [PR], Melanie Bonin, dau. of Michel and Genevieve (Coupe) Bonin; she was living D'Escousse in 1881; issue.

7. WALTER BURKE, son of William and Ludivine (McDonald) Burke, was born 1820/1, and died between 1891 and 1901. He married at Arichat, 7 Jan. 1845 RUFINE PETITPAS, daughter of Pierre and Catherine (Poirier) Petitpas, who was born 6 Feb.1820 [1901 CR].

Walter was not listed as a head of a household in the 1838 census, nor was a male of his age listed with any of his married brothers. There was however a male over age 14 listed with his sister Elizabeth Samson in the census.

Walter and Rufine were not listed in the 1861 D'Escousse census, but were living there in 1871. Walter was a house servant, Irish, in 1871, a laborer in 1881 and 1891. In 1901, Rufine, widowed, was living with her daughter Catherine Landry in Poulamon.

ROBERT (adopted), b. 26 Mar. 1878 [1901 CR]; m. at D'Escousse, 10 Aug. 1904 [SW]Marie Boudrot, dau. of Pascal and Anne (Marchand) Boudrot, and widow of Simon Langlois; living with Walter and Rufine as early as age 3, but may actually be a grandson as he is listed as a nephew, not a brother, of Catherine Burke Landry in the 1901 census; general laborer in 1901.

8. EMILIE [AMELIA] BURKE, probably the daughter of Desire and Margaret (Coupe) Burke, was born 1830/1. She married at D'Escousse about 1862, GEORGE DESTRUMMEL, probably the son of Pierre and Rosalie (Provost) Destrummel, who
was born 1833/4, and died between 1872 and 1881.

There is much to indicate that Emily Burke Destrummel was the daughter of Desire and Margaret (Coupe) Burke. The Burkes listed two females (probably daughters) under age 14 in the 1838 census who have not been identified. Also with them in 1861 was
a female between the ages of 20 and 30. Emily Burke's future husband was still living with his widowed mother in 1861, so the female with the Burkes could be Emily. In addition, Emily's 'brother' Desire married George Destrummel's sister Marie.

In 1871 George and Amelia lived in Poulamond and are listed next to the families of Desire and William Burke. George was a laborer. In 1881 the family of 'Emelily Burk' is listed in the census, but in 1891 the family of Amelia Destrumal is listed.

9. DESIRE BURKE, son of Desire and Marguerite (Coupe) Burke, was born at D'Escousse 20 Jan. 1834 [PR]. He married first, at D'Escousse 11 Jan. 1864 [PR], MARIE DESTRUMMEL, daughter of Pierre and Rosalie (Provost) Destrummel. He married second, at West Arichat, 16 Jan. 1871 [VR], ANGELIQUE BENOIT, daughter of Olivier Benoit and Angele (Bonin) Benoit, who was born 1846/7, and was buried
at D'Escousse 2 Sept. 1873, age 26 years [PR].

In 1871 Desire was a fisherman in Poulamond. His widowed mother was living with him. The census indcates that he and Angelique had been married in January of that year. Although his son Maxim is listed in the 1881 census, no other member of the family was living in D'Escousse at the time.

Children:

  i.

She was born in 1834 and died in 1860. He married second, ELIZABETH BENOIT, daughter of Olivier and Lucie (Toupin) Benoit, who was born 1837/8.

In 1861, after the death of his wife, he was living with his mother. The census lists him as a widowed male age 20 - 30. His daughter Margaret was listed with his in-laws, Jean and Genevieve Bonin. In 1871 he was living in Poulamond next to his brother Desire and his mother. He was not in D'Escousse in 1881.

She is probably their daughter Madeleine Burke who was born at D'Escousse 21 Sept. 1838 [PR], and probably died between 1881 and 1891. She married at Arichat about 1863 WILLIAM MARCHAND, probably the son of Melanie (_____) Marchand, who was born 1835/6, and probably died between 1881 and 1891.

They were not listed in the 1861 census at D'Escousse, but were there in 1871 and 1881, listed only a few houses from Rufine Burke LeBlanc. William Marchand was a fisherman. In 1891 four of the Marchand children were living together in Poulamond.
Their grandmother Melanie Marchand was living with them.

born about 1829 [28 July 1824 in 1901 census which calls him Felix]. He married about 1851 MARIE BONIN, daughter of Jean and Genevieve (Samson) Bonin. From census records her birth is listed as anywhere from 1822 to 1832 [11 Aug. 1822 in 1901 census]. It is likely though that she was born about 1832 as the 1838 census listing for her parents shows their three daughters as being under age 6.

In 1861 he was listed in the census at D'Escousse. He was a fisherman. In 1901 they were living with their son Noel in D'Escousse.
