Explore how the biological world may provide solutions for many of the technological problems faced by society. Students will examine the ways that organisms function and interact, and apply this knowledge towards understanding and creating technological advances.
Students will learn to apply evolutionary principles to strengthen the prevention and treatment of human diseases. Can we cure the common cold? Can we prevent aging? Topics include management of diseases to decrease transmission rates and virulence, the germ theory of disease, antibiotic resistance, and epidemiology.
This course is intended to get graduate students off to the right start in their graduate career. Students will discuss topics such as the responsibilites of graduate students, being a TA, designing a research project, qualifying exams, research ethics, time management, networking, and getting help.
