Barbara believes this is one of the best lists around for journalists. Although its focus is computer- assisted research and reporting it covers many journalism topics. List founder Elliott Parker, a Central Mich. Univ. professor, feeds the list with wonderful tips you won't find other places. It's an active list, so you might want to put it on digest (to do that see subscription commands in left navigation frame).

Staff at The National Institute for Computer Assisted Reporting (NICAR), which is related to Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) began this discussion group for reporters working on census stories and mapping issues.

Cops and Crime Reporters list. If you work the courts, crime or criminal justice beat here's your list. Topics range from tips to checking out leads cross-country. The list is maintained by Criminal Justice Journalists, a national professional organization of writers, editors, and broadcasters covering crime and justice. Melissa Moore, Louisians State University coordinates the discussion, which is hosted at the Poynter Institute.

More than 500 persons, mostly advisers of college student media, share ideas on this list. It averages about 70 messages a week, with fewer posts during the summer. List manager, Eddie Blick of Louisiana Tech, says recent topics include legal concerns, computers (hardware and software), staff recruitment/management, business topics, and teaching resources.

A list for copy editors which includes lots of helpful tips on grammar, references, Internet resources, freelancers and the philosophy of editing. The list began at cornell University in 1992 and has morphed a few times with BIll BLinn and Jane Lyle as current list owners. The list is unmoderated and is about 500 lines per digest. Indiana Univ hosts the list.

This is a great list -- of course, I'd say that because I run this list. Now 10 years old, the list has proved valuable for journalists, academics, government officials and others interested in freedom of information issues, access to meetings and the public's right to know. The list focuses on state access issues, but discussion of federal issues is welcomed. It's run as a project of the National Freedom of Information Coalition.

On Jhistory, academics and historians discuss related to the history of journalism and mass communication history. The list began at New York University in 1994 but has not migrated over to h-net at Michigan State University. Faculty from five universities serve as co-editors. There's also a wonderful group of Good Samaritans who track information

That's Small Programs Interest Group, meaning small journalism programs at colleges. It's mostly populated by faculty in small journalism and mass communications programs but they welcome anyone on the list.
