Feb. 12, 1809 Ð Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.

 

 

Jul. 15, 1817 Ð Darwins mother, Susannah, died; he was 8.

Summer 1825 Ð Darwin worked as an assistant in his fathers medical practice.

Mid Oct. 1825 Ð Darwin was sent to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland to study medicine.

Summer 1826 Ð Darwin hiked in the Welsh hills near his home in Shrewsbury and began making detailed observations of birds in a notebook.

Apr. 1827 Ð Darwin quit medical school.

Dec. 1827 Ð Darwin began studying to be a clergyman at Christs College at Cambridge.

Aug. 29, 1831 Ð Darwin received letters from Rev. John Henslow and George Peacock inviting him to be a naturalist aboard H.M.S. Beagle on its two year survey of South America.

Aug. 30, 1831 Ð Darwin wrote letters back saying that his father would not allow him to make the trip.

Aug. 31, 1831 Ð Darwins uncle, Josiah Wedgwood, persuaded DarwinÕs father to let him make the voyage.

Sept. 5, 1831 Ð Darwin traveled to the Whitehall Admiralty building in London to personally see if he could still be included on the voyage. The other man who was offered the trip declined, so Darwin was accepted.

Dec. 27, 1831 Ð H.M.S. Beagle left shore with a crew of 73 under clear skies and a good wind. Darwin became seasick immediately.

 

 

Oct. 2, 1836 Ð H.M.S. Beagle returned home after a voyage of four years, nine months and five days. They docked at Falmouth, England, at night during a storm.

Winter 1836 Ð Darwin began writing a paper on South America and organizing his huge collection of specimens from his voyage on the Beagle.

Sept. 1837 Ð Darwin experienced heart problems, which may have been caused by the stress brought on by his research. He stopped work for a short time.

Nov. 11, 1838 Ð Darwin proposed marriage to Emma Wedgwood.

Jan. 29, 1839 Ð Darwin married Emma Wedgwood.

Aug. 1839 Ð The Beagle was published.

Dec. 27, 1839 Ð Darwin and Emma had their first child, a boy named William Erasmus Darwin.

Mar. 2, 1841 Ð Anne Elizabeth Darwin was born.

Sept. 14, 1842 Ð The Darwins move to the village of Downe from London due to riots.

Oct. 1846 Ð Darwin began his eight-year research of barnacles.

Fall 1847 Ð Darwin decided to postpone publishing his natural selection essay because of his other research.

Aug. 16, 1847 Ð A son, Francis Darwin, was born.

Nov. 13, 1848 Ð Darwins father died. Darwin was so ill that he could not attend the funeral.

Jan. 15, 1850 Ð Another son, Leonard Darwin was born.

Apr. 23, 1851 Ð Anne Darwin died from illness.

Dec. 6, 1856 Ð Charles Waring Darwin was born.

Jun. 28, 1858 Ð Darwins son, Charles Waring, died.

Nov. 22, 1859 Ð Origin of Species was published. 1,250 copies were printed, most of which sold the first day.

Apr. 1869 Ð Thomas Huxley coined the term Darwinism in the Westminster Journal.

Mar. 1871 Ð Descent of Man was published. Unlike Origin, however, the book produced hardly any outcries from the church, and very few criticisms from fellow naturalists.

Dec. 1872 Ð Darwin stayed in London with his brother, Erasmus, for a week. While there he wrote his will.

May-Aug. 1876 Ð Darwin worked on his autobiography.

Apr. 19, 1882 Ð Darwin died at around 4 p.m. at Down House.
