Pat is a well-known educator from the Syracuse City
School District who has been a pioneer in utilizing
instructional technology. Formerly a primary classroom
teacher, she now works as a district consultant
teacher, training first-year teachers. Pat has used
these websites effectively in classroom settings and
recommends them for early literacy.

Cayla has been teaching for 5 years in the Syracuse City School district.
and she has also taught 3 years in West Virginia. She is currently
teaching Kindergarten in a Reading First school. Through
her Reading First training, Cayla has become knowledgeable about
the appropriate use of technology to enhance student learning in the
Basic Early Literacy Skills.

Cayla and Pat both agree that with all internet learning sites, the games need
to be demonstrated, practiced, and monitored at all times. These are not substitutes for teaching.

Mission Statement

By Patricia Baker

and Cayla Defren

Our mission is to integrate technology into the five essential strands of primary early literacy skills. The Fab-Five include; Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Comprehension, and Vocabulary.

This website will offer practical suggestions for elementary teachers to implement in order to enhance basic early literacy skills.

This sight will provide several shortcuts to lessons, games, and tools that will help to enhance student learning with the incorporation of technology. WHY? Teachers are extremely busy and often do not have the time to filter through the enormous number of resources available. Teachers have created this website in order to give colleagues a list of programs that are appropriate and beneficial in aiding student learning under the "Fab-Five". We hope to make their job a little easier by providing direct examples for enhancing early literacy skills.

Under each of the Fab-Five, we hope to provide examples of games, lessons, and tools that will serve as appropriate tools to enhance the basic early literacy skills.
